Introducing this year's Alumni Awards Artist

Alumna Dan Nelson trained at the University of Newcastle as a fine arts printmaker. This grounding in the printmaking process continues to inform her artistic practice today.

Her abstract paintings are strongly connected to the Australian landscape, both through colour and light. She works in sequences, painting on several surfaces at once. Together, the pieces form a cinema of mood, weather and season — a practice which stems from the repetitive, mutative nature of printmaking; reflecting her interest in temporality, and how time shapes our sense of being in the world.

‘Summer at Black Bulga’, the feature artwork in this year’s Alumni Excellence Awards, is from Dan’s series ‘Another Skin’. The pastel on paper work captures the spellbinding moment sunlight hits the smooth trunks of trees by the river in the early morning.

Dan’s exhibitions include Pass (2020), Another Skin (2018), Feeling the Moon (2016) and Formations (2015). She regularly participates in group exhibitions and has exhibited as part of two curated exhibitions at the University of Newcastle Gallery, Reimagining the Canon (2019) and Erasure (2019). Her work is represented in the University of Newcastle Collection and in many private collections. She is currently a resident studio artist at Newcastle Art Space.

We are proud to feature Dan as our alumni artist this year.
